Presented by Marcia Meredith Hensley, Author

For the program, Hensley will discuss her book, “Staking Her Claim: Women Homesteading the West.” Instead of talking about the rights of women, these frontier women grabbed the opportunity to become landowners by homesteading in the still wild west of the early 1900s. According to Hensely, “the legacy of single women homesteaders is a rich, if well hidden, vein of stories that must be mined like precious nuggets from the larger vein of the American West’s history and literature.” In “Staking Her Claim,” Hensley lets these women tell their stories in their own words, through letters and articles of the time; of adventure, independence, foolhardiness, failure, and freedom.
