Located 90 miles north of Denver, Cheyenne is the northern anchor of the Rocky Mountain Front Range. The city offers plenty of outdoor adventures, from horseback riding to rock climbing, fishing to mountain biking. Cheyenne is also the gateway to some of the nation's most beloved parks and monuments: In less than a day's drive, you can reach South Dakota's Mount Rushmore and Black Hills, Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park or Wyoming's Devils Tower, Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park.

Cheyenne Frontier Days

Cheyenne Frontier Days is the world's largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration. Started in 1897, the rodeo features 10 days of exciting action by the world's best Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association and Championship Bull Riding cowboys. The event, held the last full week in July each year, features bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping and much more. Visitors are also treated to concerts, parades, a pancake breakfast, the Air Force Thunderbirds, a chuck wagon cook-off and Western entertainment that's a trademark of this much-beloved annual celebration.

Cheyenne's Railroad History

Not to be outdone by the cowboys and rodeos, railroad historians claim Cheyenne as "America's Railroad Capital." At its heart, Cheyenne is a railroad town. The city's first residents were men who moved west to work on the transcontinental railroad. Train enthusiasts find themselves in train heaven in Cheyenne, with two steam engine displays, a railroad museum, a restored train depot and the Union Pacific's Heritage Fleet, housing three of the company's only remaining working steam engines.

Wyoming's Capital

As the capital of Wyoming, Cheyenne is home to the impressive Wyoming State Capitol Building, which is historically and politically important to the state. Nearby are the Historic Governors' Mansion, the Cheyenne Depot and the Wyoming State Museum, which houses artifacts and collections showcasing Wyoming's history from its earliest beginnings.
