Director of Marketing and Communications

 

Visit Cheyenne is seeking an experienced Director of Marketing and Communications to lead how our destination is positioned, promoted, and communicated both locally and to the traveling public. This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for brand stewardship, strategic marketing, public relations, and community-facing communications.

The Role

The Director of Marketing and Communications leads all internal and external communications for Visit Cheyenne.

  • Internal means the local community, partners, stakeholders, and residents.
  • External means visitors, meeting planners, and travel trade audiences considering Cheyenne as a destination.

You will serve as the strategic owner of the Visit Cheyenne brand and oversee marketing, public relations, content, digital platforms, and community-facing communications. This role works closely with contracted marketing and PR firms and collaborates across the organization to ensure alignment between sales, visitor experience, and brand storytelling.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Leading Visit Cheyenne’s marketing and communications strategy across all channels
  • Serving as the organization’s brand steward, ensuring consistency in voice, tone, and visual identity
  • Overseeing visitor-facing marketing campaigns that drive visitation and economic impact
  • Managing communications with the local community, partners, and stakeholders
  • Directing and holding accountable external marketing and public relations firms
  • Guiding public relations strategy, media engagement, and issue response
  • Providing strategic oversight of digital platforms, content, and analytics
  • Owning the organization’s AI strategy related to content and communications
  • Managing marketing and communications budgets and reporting on performance and ROI

Who We’re Looking For

You are a senior-level marketing and communications professional who can think strategically, execute confidently, and exercise sound judgment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field
  • 7–10 years of progressive experience in marketing and communications
  • Proven experience managing agencies and complex, multi-channel marketing efforts
  • Strong writing, presentation, and relationship-building skills

Preferred

  • Experience with a destination marketing organization (DMO), CVB, or tourism-related entity
  • Background in brand management, public relations, and community engagement
  • CDME or PDM certification

Compensation and Benefits

This is a director-level position with a salary range which reflects that, commensurate with experience, and eligibility for a performance-based incentive bonus.

Salary and incentive compensation are reviewed periodically and may be adjusted based on performance, organizational priorities, and budget considerations.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional office environment with regular local, regional, and occasional national travel. Evening and weekend work may be required based on sales activities and events. Opportunities for remote work are extended based on the DMO policy and the employee’s ability to successfully complete their work while remote.
