After spending four cloudy and cold winters in the heart of the Midwest, I am psyched to be back in the sunnier, more temperate climate of Wyoming this season. Our doses of snow tend to come in waves, broken up by stints of milder temperatures (today, for example is sunny and in the 50s). The average 236 days of sunshine in Cheyenne minimize the days I spend holed up inside during the winter months and encourage me to enjoy the average 26 inches of snow that falls here without slipping into complete hibernation.

Some people might complain, a week before Christmas, that this weather isn’t conducive to getting into the holiday spirit, but I beg to differ. As someone who isn’t inclined to voluntarily go outside when the air hurts my face, the Cheyenne DDA/Main Street has established some fantastic programs to bring some holiday cheer, regardless of the reading on the thermometer. Top of that list? The downtown plaza ice skating rink.

This FREE wintry fun is a great option for families, couples, and friends of all ages. The synthetic skating surface doesn’t need frigid temperatures to maintain its surface, so warm afternoons can be an opportunity to get out and make winter memories too. The skate rentals are also free and many weekends have themes and special guests – Santa himself will be making an appearance this coming weekend, Saturday, December 22 (that day is also an opportunity to sport that ugly sweater you got for the office Christmas party!) and Sunday, December 23. The also feature movie nights (Thursday, December 20 and Friday, December 27) and will be a sure hit at Visit Cheyenne’s NYE Ball Drop (Monday, December 31).

If you go, hours vary, so make sure to reference the schedule. Beginning Thursday through rest of December (December 20-31), they are open daily at noon (closed Christmas Day, December 25). Hope to see you out there!
