In Cheyenne - Half Day Itinerary
You've made Cheyenne a stop on your trip to someplace else. Thanks for coming to see you. Here is what we would do if we only had 1/2 a day in our city to explore.
We would start with the Wyoming State Capitol and Wyoming State Museum. They are within a few blocks of each other in downtown Cheyenne. Even if you don't have time for a full tour, you can admire the impressive architecture and snap some photos of this historic landmark.
At the opposite end of Capitol Avenue you will find the historic Cheyenne Train Depot. One of the last grand depots on the original Transcontinental Railroad, it has been beautifully restored and is home to the Cheyenne Depot Museum. . Explore the exhibits on Cheyenne's railroad history, which played a crucial role in the city's development. You do not want to miss the model railroad on the 2nd floor of the museum.
While you're at the Depot, take a walk around Depot Plaza. Depending on the time of year, there may be events or performances happening here. It's also a nice spot to sit and people-watch.
Spend the afternoon immersing yourself in the history and culture of the American West and the Daddy of 'em All at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. Learn about the iconic Cheyenne Frontier Days and how it has shaped Cheyenne.
Before you wrap up your visit, take a relaxing stroll through the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. Enjoy the beautiful flowers, trees, and other plant life, as well as the serene atmosphere.
Depending on the time of day you are here, you will find great local eats for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
One Day or More Itinerary
With two or more days in Cheyenne, you can delve deeper into its history, culture, and natural beauty. Here's an expanded itinerary:
Day 1:
Morning:
After breakfast, head to the Wyoming State Capitol building for a self guided tour. Learn about Wyoming's political history and admire the beautiful architecture of this historic and recently renovated building. After touring the Capitol, head over to the Wyoming State Museum to learn more about the natural and cultural history of Wyoming. Explore exhibits on dinosaurs, Native American cultures, and the state's pioneer heritage.
Next take the time to see how the Governor's of our state lived at the Historic Governor's Mansion, a beautifully preserved mansion that once served as the residence for Wyoming's governors. Learn about the state's political history and the lives of its governors and their families.
After grabbing lunch downtown, explore the Cheyenne Depot Museum, spending more time immersing yourself in the city's rich railroad heritage. Don't miss the exhibits on the Union Pacific Railroad and the role of trains in shaping the American West.
Afternoon:
Spend the afternoon at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, diving deeper into the history of the American West and the iconic Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. The museum is home to one of the largest collections of Western Carriages in the world.
A walk in the park at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens winds out your afternoon before exploring the downtown nightlife with breweries and distilleries, a wide variety of dining options and shopping.
Day 2:
Start the day off exploring the Terry Bison Ranch. Take a guided tour of the ranch on a trail where you can see bison up close and even feed them from the palm of your hand.
Head back into town and hop on a Wild West Trolley Tour. This 90-minute tour tells the story of Cheyenne's history and is a great way to see the city and learn about the legends of "Ol Cheyenne.
Depending on your interests and the season, consider outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, or fishing in the nearby Curt Gowdy State Park or Medicine Bow National Forest or if you'd rather stay closer to town, explore the 45 miles of Greenway Trail that can be found throughout the city.
