The enormous Sherman granite rocks are made of pink feldspar, white quartz, black specs of horneblende and other minerals such as mica. At an altitude of 8,200 feet, the views from the top of these formations are breathtaking. Overlooking dense pine directly below and endless plains under the wide open Wyoming skies, you can see up to 75 miles south. It is a place of profound beauty.
The Native Americans named this area Vedauwoo (pronounced Vee-Duh-Voo), which means "Land of the Earthborn Spirits." You'll see why they believed it was a spiritual place when tons of rock seem to balance on inches of space.More than beautiful, it's also a healthy place to visit. People of any energy and skill level can take a hike. Those who want to challenge the sky can climb vertical sheers, while others can hike on well-worn trails for short distances or all the way to the top! Rock climbers come from all parts of the world as Vedauwoo is considered one of the best places to rock climb in Wyoming. From a difficulty level of 5.0 to 5.14, there are many places to practice crack climbs. A variety of smooth trails are available on which you can mountain bike, varying from easy to steep. horseback riding is fun in and around Vedauwoo, where horses are allowed on most of the hiking trails.
Brook and brown trout can be caught from the banks of the creeks and beaver ponds using flies, worms and spinners. Early morning and early evening prove to be the best times of the day.
It's easy to get to Vedauwoo ... just 27 miles west of Cheyenne on I-80 at exit 329.
