Water Tank Mural

Project Overview

This project is a collaborative effort to create an iconic art and cultural landmark in the city, featuring the water towers perched atop Storey Boulevard, visible from many vantage points throughout Cheyenne, including from the main entrances into town.

Project partners have come together to plan and implement a mural with a selected artist for this project, envisioning a mural that reflects the local culture, history, and natural environment. This project is expected to be fundraised for and completed in 2025, with a dedication celebration to take place in 2026.

Project Information

This project is anticipated to be completed in 2025, following fundraising efforts by a community committee and led by an individual citizen. A public reveal and celebration surrounding this project will be held in 2026, as a part of the America 250 celebrations. As the project commences, other events and opportunities will take place to engage the public and get community members involved.

Design Selection Information

When reviewing designs, the committee based their selection on the following criteria:

  • Cheyenne heritage and local environment
  • A cohesive design between the two tanks
  • Culture in Cheyenne
  • Natural landscape and fit within the local environment of the hillside location
  • History of the area

In December 2024, Project partners reviewed several designs submitted for consideration via a call for artist proposals for the Water Tower Murals. After reviewing all calls, Jordan Dean was selected as the final artist for this project.

Now with the final design selected, the fundraising committee hopes to leverage the design in marketing and fundraising efforts to garner community and project support.

A Note About the Water Towers

These water towers regularly undergo heating/cooling, condensation, and other environmental considerations. Each tank has a separate coating system and will requires a specific branded paint type to match the existing coating system. This paint consists of a two-part mixing process that when mixed, can be applied via sprayer, brush, roller, etc. Additionally, the area that the artist will paint will need to be roughed prior to painting in order to allow the paint to properly adhere.
